In most cases, you want to go with at least a ½ HP garage door opener, which is more than enough to lift most garage doors. The springs are what do the lifting of your garage door, so if you have a heavier door, you will have stronger springs on the door. The opener is generally there to gently assist the door in its functioning. However, the DC motor is an excellent upgrade for those wanting a super strong motor and is comparable to a ¾ HP or higher for maximum strength and longevity. This work great for oversized, overlay, or solid wood garage doors, and often come with upgrades such as battery back up and a built in camera.

Having a battery backup is a great option! When the power is out, the opener will continue to work, so you will not be locked out of or in your garage. The second reason would be that if you lose power, the opener will keep working so it will not lose the programming to all the remotes, cars, and keypad.

While the chain drive openers are excellent for durability and strength, the belt drive openers rival them with their durability and also will be much quieter. The standard AC motor belt drives are quiet, but the DC motor “whisper” drives will be even quieter.

We can! However, we highly recommend purchasing one of the openers we carry. We install professional grade openers such as LiftMaster Professional and Chamberlain that are known for extreme durability and longevity. Most openers we carry are not sold at retail stores. When you add the cost of the opener with hiring a company to install it, the cost will come close. Not all openers are the same. Some are rated 7-10 years, while most that we carry, we see customers get 20-30 years out of them. We also can only warrant an opener our customers purchase for 90 days on labor only vs 1 year on parts and labor.

In most cases, “newer” cars will have buttons in them that can be programmed to our openers to act as a remote control due to the HomeLink® feature. No need to carry around a remote control!
